FAQ

Common questions

How does the Australian citizenship test work?

You answer 20 multiple choice questions on a computer or tablet at your appointment, in English, in 45 minutes. 5 questions are about Australian values. You pass with at least 15 of 20 right (75%) and all 5 values questions right. You see your result on screen when you finish.

How do I book the test?

You do not choose a date. After you apply for citizenship, the Department of Home Affairs sends you a letter with the date, time and place of your appointment. Bring photo ID and the letter.

How much does the citizenship test cost?

The test is included in the citizenship application fee, $595 for general eligibility in 2026. If you do not pass, another appointment is booked at no extra cost. After three appointments without a pass, the application may be refused.

Who has to sit the test?

Generally, applicants aged 18 to 59 when they apply. People aged 60 or over, under 18, and people with a permanent or enduring incapacity, or a permanent or substantial loss of hearing, speech or sight, may have an interview instead. Not sure? Ask Home Affairs, or use the eligibility check in the app.

Is the practice test really free?

Yes. The 5 questions on this page, then the full practice test in the test format, in your browser, with all 20 answers explained, retakes too. No account. In the app, the first lesson of each Part and Practice test 1 are free too. The Full plan is once, no subscription.

Do I need to pay to prepare?

No. Our Common Bond and the Home Affairs practice test are free, and you can prepare with them alone. Cal adds short lessons, targeted review and more practice tests, for once.

Are these the real test questions?

No. Nobody outside the Department has the test questions. We write our own practice questions from Our Common Bond, the guide every test question is based on, and show the page for each answer.
