Common questions

How does the Australian citizenship test work?

You answer 20 multiple choice questions in English on a computer or tablet, in 45 minutes. You pass with at least 15 of 20 right (75%) and all 5 Australian values questions right. Your result shows on screen when you finish.

Where do the test questions come from?

All questions are based on Parts 1 to 4 of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, the free booklet from Home Affairs. Home Affairs does not publish the test questions.

Who has to sit the citizenship test?

Generally, applicants for citizenship by conferral aged 18 to 59 when Home Affairs receives their application. Younger and older applicants, and some people with an incapacity or impairment, may have an interview instead.
